Marta Collazo was photographed at "Runway to Reality", a collaborative exhibit featuring work by photographer Maurene Cooper and fashion designer Suzette Opara. They combined photography and garment design to explore the prom ritual in the South Side. The event was held at the gorgeous Stony Island Arts Bank, a space run by acclaimed artist Theaster Gates. See the opening of the first part of this project in my Chicago Reader post here.
Marta was also featured in the Reader in the 7.14.16 issue:
Cutting it close
Marta Collazo's androgynous cropped hair frames her, she says, "like a
blank canvas" ready to showcase unique wares: Komono sunglasses, a bird
cameo secured to an amber necklace with a twist tie from a loaf of
bread, a geometric bracelet that was a gift from a stranger at a
Starbucks. "It's a very transparent hairdo because you cannot hide your face or
facial expressions," the 61-year-old retiree said last month during a
fashion show at the Stony Island Arts Bank that was part of the exhibit
"Runway to Reality," a collaboration between photographer Maurene Cooper
and gown designer Suzette Opara that featured south-side teens in prom
dresses. "It allows people to see you."
