The documentary "
Iris", directed by the late Albert Maysles
(who also directed
Grey Gardens), opens today at the
Music Box Theater. This is definitely a must-see for all fashion lovers, since it's a glimpse into the life of a witty style maven, with plenty of history and sound bites to share. A self-defined "geriatric starlet", Iris Apfel came to be known by a wider audience in her 80s, when she was the theme of a Metropolitan exhibit entitled "
Avis Rara", featuring her collection of statement-making garments and accessories. After that, well into her 90s, she came to star in
magazine covers and
ad campaigns, design her
own jewelry line, and now even have her own movie. Read a quick New York Times feature about her
here and listen to a couple of recent interviews she gave to NPR
here and
here.
